Fine Arts

Oil Painting – Intermediate to Advanced

Better Life Boxing (In person)

Led by Andrew Deming, this class provides seniors with fun, challenging and safe boxing workouts they can use to keep their bodies and brains healthy. All welcome. Bring a yoga mat, towel and water. Iyengar Yoga (In Person)

Instructor: Carolyn Matsuda. Yoga is for everyone and every body type. This gentle class will help you to become stronger and more flexible. Iyengar Yoga focuses on building a foundation from the ground up and aligning our arms, legs and spine to the yoga pose. You will use props and modify poses so everyone can join in. Instructor is a Jr. Intermediate Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. Bring a sticky mat and three firm blankets. Students generally spend $45-$60 on these items. Barre Stretch & Strength

Presented by CS Dance Factory. Live longer, get stronger! Standing at the barre for the whole class, you will be led through easy-to-follow, head-to-toe exercises that are effective and fun. The barre provides stability while you strengthen muscles to improve your balance, mobility and circulation. Stretch to increase flexibility and range of motion and reduce muscle tension. Pilates

This Pilates beginning/intermediate class is taught with strength, alignment and flexibility in mind. Participants are taught proper functional movement so their bodies can be maintained and injuries prevented. Taught by a nurse who specializes in injury prevention and injury management. Melt Method

Yvette Casal is the instructor. This class should not be taken unless you have previous MELT experience. This class will combine hydrating length techniques and stabilizing strength techniques to address the weak links that damage joints and inhibit your body's ability to function optimally. Lawn Bowling

This game is open to all ages and is fun, sociable and competitive. The lessons are free and all equipment is provided. The greens are open seven days a week; weather permitting. There are potlucks, both day and evening bowling, along with social and competitive bowling. Beginners to experienced bowlers welcomed. Come try it; you will like it. Annual membership is $185. Come make some sounds with Lee Kix. Play along on a virtual Zoom Drum Circle. Discover your own inner rhythm playing with some other fun seniors.

Travel Shows with Nino

Enjoy an in-depth sightseeing experience of some of the most beautiful sites in the world. Narrated by travel expert and photographer Nino Mohan. Slideshows include photos, videos and personal narration by Mohan. The group meets the fourth Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in OASIS Room 1. Led by Delane Thyen, all games take place at Costa Mesa Golf Course on both courses, and this is ongoing on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays. SAILING

OASIS Sailing Club makes recreational sailing available to members and their guests and provides instruction in sailing to those members who wish to learn how to handle a sailboat. Enjoy year-round sailing in our beautiful Catalina 34 MKII sloops, OASIS-V and OASIS-VI. Both are in excellent condition and ready for all-weather operations. Sailing is sometimes tranquil, often challenging and always enjoyable. The friendly club members welcome both experienced and new sailors. There is a $50 monthly dues fee. Sailing is free. Instruction will cover the basics of making and receiving calls, setting up voicemail, sending and receiving text messages and other general topics of use to beginning smartphone users. Cost: $40. Digital Photo Editing

Led by Barbara Yin Milbert. Thursdays, July 28-Aug. 4 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Learn to download your pictures from your camera or smart phone to your computer. Organize your pictures into folders. Learn to edit your digital photos using a photo editing program. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or the equivalent. Bring your phone e camera cord to class. Cost: $36/2. Takes place in the OASIS Computer Lab.

A Sampling of Apps

Led by Carole Kamper. Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 1-3 p.m. Explore just a sampling of the many apps that are available on your iPhone/Smartphone or iPad/tablet including Uber and Lyft, Travel, Currency Exchange and Maps, eBooks including Kindle and free eBooks that can be downloaded from the Newport Beach Library, photo sharing including Instagram. Contact the instructor if you have any questions regarding the version of your device for this class. You will be contacted by the instructor prior to the class with instructions on how to download the apps to your device. Cost: $40. Takes place in the OASIS Computer Lab.

Sherman Library & Gardens presents Macrame Hanging Planter AM on Sunday, July 17 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and Macrame Hanging Planter PM on Sunday, July 17 from 2-4 p.m. Come join the macrame craze. Beth Davidson from Dragonfly Studios in Orange is the instructor for this trendy project. The Macrame Hanging Planter is a suitable project for beginners as well as those of you who know all the "ropes." It's made with a few simple knots, approximately 15" long and you'll leave with a finished project. Pot and succulent are included.

Sherman Library & Gardens presents Workshop: Mosaic Butterfly on Monday, July 18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. In the spirit of Sherman's summer-long Mosaic Art Exhibit, you too can learn how to make a beautiful mosaic butterfly. Mosaic artist/instructor David Jarvinen from The Mosaic Guys is back to present a fun workshop using glass tiles to make the butterfly. It is attached to a metal base with a hanger and will be a great addition to your garden. Project measures 12" across the wings. All supplies are included. Join a Park Ranger for a fun introduction to the animals and plants of Crystal Cove State Park in their weekly Junior Ranger programs taking place on Tuesdays, July 19 and 26 from 10-11 a.m. This children's nature program is a favorite in State Parks and allows kids to earn a badge, stamps, a poster, or a patch. Tours are back so come explore Crystal Cove like you never have before. Guests join Crystal Cove Conservancy staff on a walking tour of the Historic District in Crystal Cove State Park. Learn about the park's history, stories and even get a peek inside of one of the park's historic cottages. All ages are welcome. The first tour date isAugust 10 from 2:30-4 p.m. there is a maximum of 12 guests per tour, so register now! If dates sell out, new dates will be announced.

Enjoy an early morning low tide and beat the crowds at Crystal Cove State Park where a park naturalist will lead a guided tidepool walk to Rocky Bight and help identify animals and describe some awesome adaptations of the tidepool organisms on Wednesday, July 20 at 9 a.m. Meet at Los Trancos parking lot near the trailer. (PCH inland at Los Trancos). $15 day-use parking fee.

Explore Crystal Cove State Park at your own pace. Head out on the Environmental Study Loop Trail or into Moro Canyon with self-guided activities on this Family Fun Morning on Friday, July 15 from 9-11 a.m. Look for animal evidence, smell local plants, and listen for bird songs while learning about the natural resources in the park. Meet a Park Naturalist to pick up your adventure goodies at the Ranger Station. Crystal Cove State Park is a great spot to look for resident dolphins, migrating whales and birds just passing by the coastline. Join a park naturalist for a Whale & Wildlife "Twalk" on Saturday, July 16 at 9 a.m. and learn some fun facts about the coastal creatures as you walk the bluff trail and scan the ocean at each overlook. Bring binoculars for better viewing. Meet at Pelican Point lot #4 (PCH coastward at Newport Coast left at kiosk to the last lot). $20 day-use parking fee.

Walk with a park naturalist and see if you can spot the plants and animals on Crystal Cove State Park's Nature Bingo on Thursdays, July 21 and 28 from 9-10 a.m. Walk the 1/2 mile Environmental Studies Loop Trail to search for the natural treasures in the park. Meet at the Berns Amphitheater (PCH inland at stoplight School-State Park, follow the signs to the Campground/). $15 day-use fee.

Enjoy a day at Crystal Cove State Park and learn about sharks when students from the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach staff their Shark Shack information and activity booth and help beachgoers build an appreciation for and eliminate fear about sharks and other marine life on Friday, July 22 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Check out some cool shark stuff, play a game, and learn some fun facts about these amazing creatures and about the technology the lab is using to study them. The Shark Shack will be popped up near the Beachcomber Cafe. Park in the Los Trancos lot (PCH inland at stoplight Los Trancos then walk across the street or take the shuttle). $15 day use fee.

State parks, campgrounds and s'mores are a summertime tradition. Family Plein Air Art Exploration classes have been added for artists 8 years of age and up. During the two-hour program, family teams will explore the basics of plein air painting, and then each family member will create a masterpiece that captures the summer spirit of the Cove.
